I highly recommend a compact camera when you are feeling adventurous. 1. It is better than no camera at all, and 2. Should you have it stolen from your car, fall in the water or take a spin down the hill you don't lose a large investment. And if plan on being around the water you should use an Ikelite waterproof case. Underwater casings that cost a fortune for your SLR or relatively cheap for your point and shoot. Check my site for underwater shots with my Canon Powershot.
