Enter drawing for a free 2-week lens rental

// March 2nd, 2009

A winner has been chosen! Borrowlenses selected Bryan who wants to get his hands on the Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 AF DX. Congratulations! Thanks for playing, everybody.

BorrowLensesWhat better way to get acquainted with online lens rentals than with a free rental? The folks at BorrowLenses.com contacted me over the weekend and generously offered Photodoto readers another chance to receive a free 2-week lens rental. This is the second promotion we’ve done with them. Bryan Villarin was the winner of our last drawing and spent some free quality time with the Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM.

Here’s what you have to do:

  • Leave a comment describing which lens you would like to rent and why you want to rent it. Leave a valid email address so that we can contact you if you win (your email address will remain private and is used for no other purpose).
  • Open to U.S. residents only.
  • The winner will need to place an order online with a valid credit card number to receive the rental. The card will not be charged but is required to ensure that the lens is returned. BorrowLenses.com is a reputable business but if you don’t feel comfortable with this condition please don’t enter.
  • The offer excludes super telephoto lenses and camera bodies.

That’s it! The comments will remain open until midnight on Tuesday March 17th, 2009. After that, BorrowLenses.com will choose a winner and we’ll announce it here. Good luck! And a big thank you to BorrowLenses.com for sponsoring this giveaway.

I was out shooting with a friend, and we found some trumpeter swans that we wanted to shoot. I have a Nikon 18-200VR, but it was just too short to shoot the trumpeter swans properly. I’d love to try out the Nikon 200-400mm f/4 G-AFS ED-IF VR, and have the reach beyond what I currently have. The F/4 would be a super lens to play with on my D300; fast and sharp.

  2. Teresa C says:

Having experimented with a cheap fish-eye toy camera I’d like to test out the pro-quality Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Fisheye for Canon lens to maximize the shooting fun.

  3. Mike Woodhouse says:

I would really like to try the Nikon 200-400mm f/4 lens as Yellowstone will be opening soon. I would like to try it on Wildlife this Spring in addition to the 70-300mm I currently use.

  4. mitchell says:

The canon 70-200mm f/2.8L is the lens I’ve wanted to use. I shoot a lot of sports, and I would love to try this lens out before I buy it. I’ve planned to rent it later this year for a baseball tournament, along with a 2x extender, but I’d love to play around with it sooner.

I’ve been nervous about renting lenses, but if the experience went well, I can see myself renting very often, I travel a lot and sometimes I wish I some different lenses to take a long for the particular trip I’m on.

  5. This shot is the inspiration for a shot I want to create:RCircular Fisheye. I’d choose the Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 fisheye for Nikon. I have this idea to go on the Wrigley Field tour and take a picture with the circular fisheye from short center field. I’d have the lens facing straight up in the air. I think I could get most of the stadium in the picture including the famous scoreboard. I’d remotely trigger the camera with Pocket Wizards so I could get my ugly mug out of the shot. I live a couple miles from Wrigley so I’d go on the tour on a day where the clouds and sky would add to the shot. What do you think?

  6. Evan Travers says:

I would like to borrow the nikon 105mm micro. I am such a huge macro fanatic, but I’ve never handled a true 1:1 macro. I would love to spend a week with such a lens, especially with spring just beginning here in Alabama.

  7. kelli cohee says:

i would love to play with the nikon 85 1.4
i think it takes brilliant portraits and creates yummy bokeh. i would love to take it on an upcoming wedding or engagement shoot.
    thanks!

    • Even though a bit soft, nothing beats f/1.4 glass. I love the 50mm f/1.4 (both versions), the 85mm f/1.4, and have even borrowed the ultra expensive 28mm f/1.4. All of them are great for shooting bands in dark clubs and wedding with their dark churches and reception halls. Outside of the 50mm f/1.4 ($300 or $500 depending on the version) they are pricey to buy so renting is a great option.

  8. Glenda B. says:

I would love to rent the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L for capturing my son’s baseball games.

  9. I would love to borrow the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 for Nikon. I love landscape photography, but I haven’t had a chance to try anything wider then an 18mm lens. I’m picking the Tokina specifically because I am fascinated with using it for night landscapes with starry skies.

    • I love the Tokina 11-16 more and more each day. I use it equally for people and for landscape shots. Buy a bubble level for your camera’s hot shoe if you are shooting wide landscapes. It has really helped me get the image just right in the camera.

  10. Ryan A. says:

I would love to try out the 18-200vr for my nikon d50. The local state park lake is melting and would have fun getting some shots of the ducks and birds or other wildlife I just can’t get that close to. I am also trying to decide between buying the 18-200vr or 18-55vr and 55-200vr so I it would be great to see the diference in glass quality.

    Thanks, Ryan

  11. Dana Stone says:

I’d probably test out the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR DiII or the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 AF-S ED DX. (still can’t decide!) I’ve been debating about buying one of these…it would be nice to test it out before I pay for it!

I am near a military base and I’m going to be shooting some reunions as families greet soldiers returning from Iraq. Either fast lens would really help!

  12. Jess Hughes says:

I would love to borrow the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. I am just starting out as a professional photographer, and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to try out a pro-quality lens (that is presently way out of my budget). I am planning on doing an engagement shoot with my cousin and his fiance, and this would be the perfect tool for the job.
    Thanks!

  13. KG says:

I would love to rent the Canon 100-400 L. I’ve played with this lens once for shooting portraits and absolutely fell in love with it. I’d love to try it out again.

  14. Gary P. says:

I’d luv to try the Nikon 500 f/4 ED AF-S VR w/my D80. i have the Nikon 80-400 and luv it, but I’d like to see what an extra 100mm and a full stop faster would do.

  15. Paul Pagano says:

I would LOVE to rent the Canon 500mm f/4L for a couple of weeks! Now that it’s bird breeding season here in Florida there are beautiful Egrets, Herons, Storks and Ibis I’d love to photograph with the 500L.

  16. shelly wynecoop says:

i’m starting a photography business and am saving for the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR. i would LOVE to check it out before buying to be certain it is what i’m really looking for.

    • This is a must have lens. It is optically amazing at 2.8 or 11. It is the fasted focusing lens I have ever used. You will not regret renting or buying this lens.

  17. Steve Mohundro says:

I’m really considering buying the MC Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye (for Canon, although if I buy one myself I might end up getting the M42 mount version). It would be really great to get a chance to test it out!

  18. Isaac says:

I’d rent the Canon 100-400mm L lens. I have been reading all the reviews of this lens around the internet and decided that I really need to try it out. Actually, I was going to order the lens today to rent in a couple weeks while my wife and I were going to be at the Coast for her birthday. I had a few bird sanctuaries mapped out, and theres a local pond that has several dozen bird species and turtles too! Sadly, I now find myself unemployed as of yesterday. All my photography plans have been put on hold. Can’t wait to get my hands on this lens, but I guess I’ll have to find employment first.

  19. Pete says:

I love the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. It will be perfect when the weather starts to warm up around here. Thanks for the chance.

  20. Anne says:

I’m really looking for a telephoto lens right now, and next month, I’m going to see Obama throw out the first pitch at the Nats home opener, so I’d love to rent a telephoto for that – I think I’d want to rent the Canon EF 70-300 f4.5-5.6 DO IS for that.

  21. Raj Sarma says:

I shoot Olympus and I noticed all comments here are for either Canon or Nikon, nevertheless, I’ll try my luck. I’d love to shoot with the Zuiko 14-35mm F2.0 lens. Not only is this one stellar zoom lens, but I’d love to use it in low light to see how well it really works.

In case this lens isn’t available, my next choice would be the Xuiko 7-14mm F4.0 lens. The is quite simply one of the best UWA lenses out there and I’d love to see what artistic possibilities this lens can create for me.

  22. Kyle Hailey says:

I want to try the Canon 24-70mm 2.8
sounds like the perfect work horse for Canon.
I’ve tried th 16-35mm f2.8 and it’s great but I think teh 24-70 would be more practical and save the wide angle stuff for a dedicated lens

  23. Dave says:

I’m going to a party at the Playboy Mansion later this month, and would love a super low-light lens like the 85mm f/1.2 to get some great low-light shots. I’m usually shooting a 24-105 f/4 and would love the extra stops to capture the “action”.

  24. Liz Brown says:

I shoot my daughters modeling photos for her comp card and portfolio. I use a Canon 450D. I shoot her photos with a 50mm 1.8. A major clothing company saw my work and is going to use me to shoot part of their Spring 2010 line. I’d love to try the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and see how my work will look with it. I don’t have the budget yet to buy another camera body, but a great lens will help me a lot.
    Thanks,
    Liz

  25. Patrick says:

I’d love to give the Canon EF 24-70MM f2.8 a spin for indoor portraits.

  26. Maureen B says:

I would really like to try any 1.4 or 1.8 lens as I do not own one and know it would change many things for shooting.

  27. Melissa J says:

I would love to try the Canon EF 100-400mm. I take a lot of wildlife shots and my ancient 75-300 just doesn’t get me quite close enough. I photograph a lot of bears, so keeping my distance is rather important!! :)

  28. Terri says:

I’d love to try out the Nikon 14mm f/2.8 AF ED for indoor architectural shots. It would be a great kick in the pants to hook up with another design company to do a trade show book for em.

I have yet to play much with a wide angle lens as I opted for a telephoto with my last purchase – a decision I do not regret. Plus I love good fast glass!

  29. Pam says:

I am dying to play with the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L because first, I’ve never played with L glass (I know) and secondly, I’ve never played with a wide angle! There’s SO many shots in my head to shoot with a wide angle and I would love to get to some of them!

  30. (SCREAM) How AWESOME! I already own & adore my 50mm f/1.4 for most situations but would love to try getting closer on some macro shots or faster with candids of my children … hmmm, I guess that would be between the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens, the Canon 24mm-70mm f/2.8L USM Zoom lens, or the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens. Experiencing any of them would be a trill!

  31. Arlene says:

Sigma 8mm f/3.5 EX DG Fisheye for Canon looks like a fun thing to try out before buying one. Thanks!

  32. I want to try the Canon 24-70mm 2.8 ! I am just getting into the photog business and i think this would be a great versatile lens for portraits & candids!

  33. Jayashree says:

I want to try out either Nikon 18-200 VR or Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens.
I want Nikon 18-200 for my daily walk around lens and also to get good night shots and since it has VR capability, i am hoping to get a good quality image as a result.

and Sigma 10-20 mm as i want to try my hands on wide angle photography.

  34. Aaron Chen says:

I would like to try the Canon 14mm f2.8 II. There’s a lot of nature and architecture around me that give the lens a nice workout and I also wanted to see how well it could shoot as a walk-around (odd, I know)

  35. Cole Scott says:

Like to give the Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR a run for its money. Currently shooting with the older 80-200mm f/2.8 without VR (great lens btw) and want to see if its worth the shekels for an upgrade.

  36. Bernard says:

I’d really like to take any tilt shift for a spin. I’ve seen the results out of them and they’re just intriguing.

  37. Brad says:

I’d like to try out a sigma 10-20 to add depth to my landscapes and to use while flying to get some interesting shots

  38. Julia Wade says:

    A girl’s gotta try out a Canon Fisheye 15mm f/2.8 with her new 5D!

  39. sarah k chen says:

i’d so rent the 45 2.8 tse to test out! as a wedding photographer i’d want to see if it’d fit into my style of shooting and whether the big investment would work in a fast paced environment or get left sitting in my thinktank.

  40. Greg says:

I’ve got some high-rise spying that I need to do to prove to my children that I DO SEE ALL. So the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS would be a fun borrow!

  41. Dave Rugh says:

I’d like the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR because it is so versatile; low light; portraits; sports

  42. Andy Clement says:

I would like to rent the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L lens. It’s a lens I would probably never buy but I would love the opportunity to play with a tilt-lens lens.

  43. Dale says:

I would love to give the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX for Nikon a spin! I have been eyeballing this wide angle for a while to hit the streets of Kansas City with.

  44. Nick A. says:

I shoot a lot of skateboarding and would love to check out that nikon 10.5 fisheye before I decide to buy one.

    Thanks, Nick

  45. Ben says:

I do youth ministry for a living and i shoot a great deal inside of a church, and for pictures of events etc. We are also going on a mission trip to guatemala and i’ve been only using a 28-135 IS for a few years. I’ve heard great things about 70-200mm 2.8 for everything that i do and would love to spend some time trying it out.

  46. Kevin says:

I may be different than the other contestants, but please give this one a shot! I’m a 15 year old student from Florida who LOVES disney and everything about it, and I’m in love with photographing everything that I do there and experience. I would die to try the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Lens and see how they work over at the happiest place on earth, maybe so I could get mickey bokeh? Just please? Make a ‘DREAM COME TRUE’? (:

  47. Stacey says:

I’d want to try out the canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS. I’ve been thinking about taking the leap to purchase this lens, with summer coming I love wildlife shooting, and the best shots are often late in the evening or early in the morning, when light is low. It would be great to be able to test drive it first. Thanks!

  48. Angie P. says:

I would love to rent a 17-40mm lens for my Canon Digital Rebel XT.

It’s a lens I’ve been wanting for some time as it gets so much in frame. It would be an amazing every day lens for me.

I would love the opportunity to get a free rental to get more acquainted with it.

  49. Gary Lassere says:

Jazzfest Baby! Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D would get some great shots.

  50. Lori O says:

I would love to try the nikon 50mm 1.4G. I am dying to give that one a try!!! I long for good bokeh!
