Sharp, fast focus, and neglible distortion. Better with aperture closed to f/2 and smaller. — Thursday, April 23, 2009.

This is the best lens I have bought. I use it just about everyday. I recommend this lens to anyone. — Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

The second favorite lens in my bag. I honestly wish I got to use it more often, but since most of my work is done with a wide angle, I switch to my 18-55 f/3.5 or my 28mm f/2.8. But, I can't say enough about the sharpness of this glass. Its a great low-light companion for my D50 and I've used it to produce some really solid concert shots. Plus, its hard to beat for the price! — Tuesday, February 27, 2007.

I received this as a directed gift a couple of months ago, and after a difficult period where it competed against my zooms on a mountain/roadtrip holiday it is now basically permanently fixed to my camera - I think almost all of my thanksgiving picture were taken with it ([link]). I use this on a Nikon D50. The pros are a) fast focus b) crisp pictures c) larger aperture over the "with camera" lenses allows for better low-light and handholding d) no better lens for the price Average: a) the "bokeh" ([link] is average I believe, but still nice. Downs: a) manual focus ring is awkward to use b) you have to switch both the camera *and* the lens to manual focus c) it was physically larger (1.5"?) than I was expecting. — Friday, December 1, 2006.

Got this for my birthday and it's a great lens. I love the f/1.8 for nice dof and for the ability to shoot in low light. The lens is very sharp and quick. The autofocus is a little noisy but is acceptable for a lens in this price range. — Saturday, September 30, 2006.

I agree with the other reviews. This lens is a must. Best bargain in photography for under $100.00 Superb sharpness, and fast. Even if you don't use it often, it should be in your kit for when you need to do low available light photography. — Sunday, July 2, 2006.

For the money you pay, there is no better lens. Since I bought it, its spent 95% of the time on my camera with no complaints. It can take images super sharp, it can be super fast. If you don't have it, buy it. now. go! — Friday, June 16, 2006.

What a great lens and incredible value. I think its quite sharp at f/1.8, and it only gets better from there. Build quality seems good, in spite of its plastic feel. Lens attachment isn't as smooth as my other lenses on my D70, takes a litte more effort to turn it into locked position, but that may just be my particular lens. Excellent performance in low light, fast focusing, and quiet. Go get one. — Saturday, May 20, 2006.

This is a terrific lens for portrait photography on a DX sensor. It's a little bit soft at f/1.8 but if you stop down to about f/2.2 it starts to get nice and sharp. If you're just beginning, it's the perfect lens to get because the price is so low and it will allow you to take low light shots and isolate your subject using narrow depth of field. Highly recommended for beginners and as a general use portrait lens. — Friday, May 12, 2006.

For $100 you cannot go wrong with this lens. Great in low light, wonderful bokeh, nice and compact. Also serves well for portraits. I've had a tough time using any other lens since I've gotten this one. — Monday, May 1, 2006.

As a newbie I have to say this is an excellent lens. The lens is light and its maximum aperture allows you to get away with handholding the camera in some pretty low light levels. Its autofocus seems accurate albeit noisy and to be honest I've quite liked the bokeh. It is an excellent lens to get to grips with composition and learn about depth of field. It is excellent value and I have used it so often, that I don't regret getting it. — Tuesday, April 25, 2006.

This is a lens that ANY SLR photographer should have. These used to be the standard lenses on SLRs in the 80s, and in fact, the used model I bought was one of the earlier models from the 80s. Performance: - Decent bokeh. I say decent because it depends on the light source in the background. You can get very smooth bokeh if you're careful. - Noisy zoom. Not recommended if you need a silent lens. - Very low vignetting. Typical of a prime lens. I've heard of it back-focussing, but I haven't really noticed that with my photos. — Friday, April 21, 2006.

Every person getting into the dSLR world should buy this lens. Great in low-light, very sharp, and SO CHEAP. Its major problem is hideous bokeh, which is a bigger issue on dSLRs because people tend to use them as portrait lenses, and in portraiture bokeh means more than just a silly catch phrase. — Thursday, April 20, 2006.

An excellent lens, I'd recommend it without hesitation to anyone. Very sharp and an excellent performer in low light. My only very minor issue is the occasional odd-looking out of focus highlight. — Tuesday, April 18, 2006.

Great lens. In terms of performance per dollar, this is the best you can get. It's 75mm effective on a DX sensor, which makes it a little tight, but also allows for some interesting compositions. I keep this lens on my camera 95% of the time. Much sharper than anything else in it's price range, and even most of the 500 dollar zooms. — Monday, April 17, 2006.
