Summer 2006 Photo Contest Winners Announced

I don’t know why I do this to myself. Organizing one of these things is a walk in the park compared to actually going through all of the entries, getting to a short list of candidates, discussing them with your fellow judges, and agonizing over the final decision. There were nearly 300 entries. That’s an impressive turnout (if not the 400 I was hoping for—maybe next time). If you recall, I’d promised bigger prizes if we reached 400. Well, I’ve decided to give the larger prizes anyway.

There were a lot of different interpretations of the theme. We had roads. We had far away places. Boats, motorcycles, and lots of people. Each of these photos stood out based on a combination of technical excellence, adherence to the theme, and visual impact. And here they are:

5th place and winner of a Flickr Pro account (or extension) goes to chillntravel for mt bromo view – indonesia:

4th place and winner of a Flickr Pro account (or extension) goes to dshymas for Herre we gooo…:

3rd place and winner of a Flickr Pro account (or extension) goes to wasabi42 for Snaefellsjokull:

2nd place and the winner of a $150 gift card from B&H Photo goes to J. Star for May + motorcycle = proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Maybe I’ve got a soft spot for bikes. But the road, the curve ahead and what lies beyond, the feeling of freedom that riding gives… I can almost taste the bugs in my teeth:

1st place and the winner of a $250 gift card from B&H Photo goes to HalonaCoast for Ao Nang Tower, Thailand. 200 feet up a sheer cliff face in Thailand with nothing but a little rope and some steel keeping you from certain death? Personally, I think rock climbing is crazy. But it’s pretty adventurous.

And the bonus Flickr Pro account in the “blog about the contest” drawing goes to Mainline Mom of Water water everywhere.

Finally, a few honorable mentions:

Congratulations, everyone! Prize winners will be contacted by email shortly to claim their prizes. Thank you for participating!

  • HalonaCoast

I would have to agree with J. Star, this totally made my day and not a bad start to what hopefully will be a memorable 30th birthday (tomorrow). First time I have every won anything like this. Guess it depends on what you are used too … I would be way more scared driving a motorcycle with one hand and trying to frame a shot than up on a rock face, tied in with a rope. :) Thanks to everyone for the congrats and thanks John for putting on the contest.

    Aloha,
    Chad
