:-) It does seem excessive. But it has its specialized uses. The D3 isn’t a camera for everyone (especially with that price tag).
I was still unimpressed with the low-light focus on the D3… a pro friend of mine shoots events with me and when he originally got the camera it had all sorts of problems until he tweaked some of the default settings, just like he had to do with his D2X. There’s some 3D tracking feature which doesn’t work well, and the AF light only comes on with very specific focal lengths. Even so, my 20D and 5D focus as well in low light with f/4 lenses as his D3 does with f/2.8 lenses. I will give him the edge on fps :)
