There is a well-known saying: “Love what you do, and you never work a day in your life.”  For professional photographers, we can imagine that, more than likely, this holds true for them.  There’s no doubt that the reason we are involved with photography, whether it be for hobby or by trade, is because it is an enjoyable activity, and we get satisfaction out of it.

But most of us aren’t content with just enjoyment in what we do; as humans, we have a deep need to improve on the world in which we inhabit, to make a difference.  We all have different ways of doing this, and photographers are no exception.

As a photographer and aspiring writer, I’ve asked myself a few times before, “What subject or person in photography hasn’t been done to death, and is worthy of an article I’d actually read myself?” The answer, I found, is a formula.

Take a young, talented photographer. Give him an idea, unlike any other you’ve encountered in the field. Make him passionate about the idea, add in nerves of absolute steel, have him don a clown mask, and turn him into a ghost. The result? Tom Ryaboi.

Tom, or “Roof Topper” as he’s affectionately known in the back alleyways of the photography industry, is one of the originators of the “roof topping” phenomena, which involves finding a way to the tops of buildings and other structures that are normally not accessible to the public, and capturing the spectacular views provided there.

If you’ve ever had an interesting project for which you needed funding, then you’ve already likely heard of Kickstarter, the crowd-funding website that was launched only in 2009. Since then, though, the site has already provided the means for funding various video games, movies, food-associated projects, comics, stage shows, journalistic endeavors and music aspirations.

The site doesn’t allow people to invest in the project asking for funding. Instead, it only allows people who back projects to receive either tangible rewards or once-in-a-lifetime opportunities in return for their support and funding.
